Passion for Learning

PREAMBLE

The Problem

Johann Gottlieb Fichte: “Education should aim at destroying free will so that after pupils are thus schooled they will be incapable throughout the rest of their lives of thinking or acting other than as their school masters would have wished."

Fichte’s ideas were brought to the USA by Horace Mann in the 1850’s; these ideas were foundational to the design of industrial high schools by the Committee of Ten (1892).

Newborns can learn something as complex as language in a matter of months because the brain’s dopamine-opioid system releases a rush of positive feelings each time they figure something out. Factory schools dampen this reward for learning by celebrating students who do what they are told.

This compliance-focused model homogenizes students into factory and cubicle workers who work like interchangeable robots. They learn to have answers given rather than sought. The massive investment in charter schools and Federal laws like Race to the Top or No Child Left Behind have only produced more efficient factory schools. The industrial model itself has not been challenged for over a century. Until now.

Welcome to hs.credit! We offer high stakes, project-based assessment for students in their final two years of K-12 learning. The result is a shift from STUDENT AS CONSUMER of learning to STUDENT AS CREATOR of quality academic work products.

MISSION

Be the Nation’s Most Trusted Source of College Readiness Assessment

“What gets measured, gets done,” so how we assess learning matters.

Our three-stage credit model: STAKE, PITCH, MINT.

“Teaching to the test” trains people to act like sheep; “Teaching to work products” builds work ethic.

By offering a high school transcript for CREATORS, we define a new concept, #AcademicCapital:

  • STUDENTS at ANY school (public, private, parochial, home-school) have equal access to a project-based transcript

  • EDUCATORS with a track record of inter-rater reliability become Credit Experts, paid to evaluate student work

  • University ADMISSION OFFICERS gain access to a high-resolution view of any student’s academic achievements since each credit is linked to an approved student work product

VISION

A World in Which All K-12 Schools Prepare Students for the CREATOR Economy, igniting #PassionForLearning by earning #AcademicCapital.

Just as Airbnb has no hotel rooms nor Uber any cars, hs.credit has no schools. HS.CREDIT is a academic platform of, by, and for CREATORS. By refocusing high stakes assessment on quality academic work products, we promote complex, creative thinking—the kind of learning experiences that brain research has shown leads to a lifelong passion for learning.

REVENUE MODEL

Institutions can view a single record for free when a student shares a transcript link or QR code directly. Institutions pay an annual subscription fee for API access to our national database of performance-based academic outcomes.
